Programming, Do I have what it... [Revisited]

kensai — Sat, 05/03/2008 - 15:47

Well, lets revisit this subject and see how I have progressed. Since I first wrote that I was going to begin learning programming, I did really started to learn programming using Ruby. Alongside with a great tutorial/book by Chris Pine (he names his kids after programming languages), programming seemed just fine for me. I got pretty good with Ruby, well not good enough to write a complicated program but I did understood most of the tutorial and even accomplished the exercises. But there is a problem, I really don't have anything to do with programming I am not motivated as of the moment to keep at it. So, what have I decided? I will dedicate my efforts to web programming instead.

As you may know by now, I am studying a bachelors degree on Networks and Telecommunications, knowing that you might get the picture that everything is more Internet based on my schedule. Also I do the Arch Linux Newsletter, and I work on HTML code there, so it would make my job easier if I had a deeper understanding of HTML, XHTML, CSS and the likes. Time is always tight so I am making this decision to concentrate efforts on web programming, and when I do get that mastered or in between I can improve my programming skills.

"Programming" in Web Programming

Leif Thande (not verified) — Sat, 05/03/2008 - 19:42

Web Programming isn't so far from application programming. Once you understand the basic constructs, you can apply them to whatever you do. Also, if you want to use what you know of Ruby, you should take a look at Ruby on Rails.

Ruby *on Rails*, not Ruby

When I told you Ruby on Rails, I really meant Ruby on Rails, the web framework, not just Ruby the interpreted programming language. :) Anyway, you haven't wasted any time at all, doing non-web programming, because a lot of it can be used on the web. Oh, well, I wish you good luck again, and don't tell me you're switching to DNA replication next time. :D

In a way, contemporary web

In a way, contemporary web programming will make you a better "application developer" too. Because of the recent trends of MVC-ish seperation among the large web programming frameworks, you'll be inclined to practice cleaner application structure practices.
